چکیده

Existing works in automatic generation of interference-free 5-axis surface machining toolpaths bear a serious drawback – in order to avoid the obstacles, the tool is often required to make drastic change in its orientation between neighboring contact points. Such quick change in tool’s orientation can never be made possible in reality due to the stringent physical limit on the speed and acceleration of the rotary motions of the machine tool. The usual ad-hoc solution to this problem is to smooth the toolpath in the configuration space, which though is prone to special situations of failure and is not able to guarantee the absolute compliance with the given angular velocity limit. In this paper we present an approach to this problem by directly involving the angular velocity limit in the search process. The presented algorithm will automatically generate a 5-axis toolpath that not only is interference-free but also guarantees the angular-velocity compliance. Delicate computation and manipulation of visibility maps and their derivative data ensure that the proposed algorithm is computationally feasible with acceptable computing time and memory requirement. Test examples are given to demonstrate the promising use of the proposed solution.

Characterization of 3D surface topography in 5-axis milling

Within the context of 5-axis free-form machining, CAM software offers various ways of toolpath generation, depending on the geometry of the surface to be machined. Therefore, as the manufactured surface quality results from the choice of the machining strategy and machining parameters, the prediction of surface roughness in function of the machining conditions is an important issue in 5-axis ma...

Generation of Alfvén Waves by Small-Scale Magnetic Reconnection in Solar Spicules

Alfvén waves dissipation is an extensively studied mechanism for the coronal heating problem. These waves can be generated by magnetic reconnection and propagated along the reconnected field lines. Here, we study the generation of Alfvén waves at the presence of both steady flow and sheared magnetic field in the longitudinally density stratified of solar spicules. The initial flow is assumed to...

Energy Efficiency Analyses of Toolpaths in a Pocket Milling Process

This paper presents an approach to analytically determine the most energy efficient toolpath strategy in mechanical machining. This was achieved by evaluating the electrical energy requirement of the NC codes generated for the zag, zigzag, and rectangular contour toolpath strategies. The analytical method was validated by performing pocket milling on AISI 1018 steel with the considered toolpath...

Toolpath generation method for four-axis NC machining of helical rotor

Purpose: This paper presented a method for generating the toolpaths for the machining of a helical rotor on five-axis machine tool. Design/methodology/approach: The geometry of the helical rotor is designed based on the ruled surfaces. Through the homogeneous coordinate transformation, the cutter location of the flank milling for four-axis machining can be generated. The postprocessor are devel...

Toward 5-axis High Speed Machining

We present a scheme to construct C1 continuous toolpath for 5-axis pocketing of high speed machining. A continuous toolpath synthesis is proposed, that forms out circular segments of maximally inscribed sizes and linear segments connecting these circular segments. Extending earlier work that employed the Medial Axis Transform to compute these maximally inscribed circles for 2D planar pockets, t...
